Rock Art at Achnabreck

Cup-marking at Achnabreck

A major new rock art panel has been identified by the Forestry Commission in Kilmartin Glen. This panel had survived under some spruce trees for close to 60 years, suggesting that it must have been covered in soil and vegetation well before it was planted, and was only revealed when one of these trees was blown over during recent high winds. The main feature comprises a series of concentric rings around 1m in diameter, surrounding a central cup. The ring-grooves show evidence of having been created by linking a series of pecked cups. A number of other possible cup and ring markings are discernable on the adjacent rock.

The area around Achnabreck is particularly rich in rock art of this type, with some of the largest groups of cup and ring markings known having been recorded from this area. Archaeologists from Kilmartin House Museum have undertaken works to monitor the removal of the fallen tree, to ensure that this operation did not result in damage to the panel.
