Following on from an initial phase of trial trenching, ongoing mitigation fieldwork undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd in advance of construction of a new health and care centre at the Vale of Leven Hospital in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, has identified the enigmatic circular features shown above and below. The feature comprises a penannular circuit of stones, which varies from between 0.75m to 2m in width. This is composed of large stones, some of which are located with a heavy black burnt fill, though this is only present in one sector of the circuit. In the centre of the feature is a roughly triangular pit containing two fills - again, one half of the fill is composed entirely of burnt and heat-fractured stone, while the other section has not been affected in this way. The whole site had been sealed below a layer of silt, and does not appear to have undergone significant damage from ploughing.
