Hidden Heritage Excavation Sites

The Hidden Heritage project, looking at the history of the isthmus between Tarbet and Arrochar using archaeology and documentary research, has identified a number of sites that will be subject to excavation over the course of May. The project, undertaken by members of the local community in conjunction with staff from Northlight Heritage has already completed various initial phases of work, including documentary research and walkover, geophysical, digital and plane table surveys, with the aim of identifying sites that are suitable for excavation, and over the next four weeks will proceed with the investigation of the following sites:

  • May 7-12: Crag an't Serraich, a deserted rural settlement in the middle of the isthmus.
  • May 14-19: Possible McFarlane dwelling in Tarbet Playing Field.
  • May 21-26: Pre-improvement site and circular boundary opposite Ballyhennan Church
  • May 28-30: Clearance cairn mounds and Cenotaph mound by Church Road

Although places on the digging team have largely been filled, further information on the project can be found on the Three Villages website, and we look forward to receiving information on the results of this project!
