The stone shown in the image above represents part of a millstone identified by a householder during works to create a retaining wall at a propoerty in Brisbane Glen Road, Largs. The stone, which measures around 56 inches in diameter, is too large to have been operated by hand, suggesting that it would have been emoployed in a powered mill, though it is unusually thin when compared to other examples. It was found in a secondary context, having been moved from its original location, and it is unknown from which mill it came; the most likely candidate may be the Noddsdale Mill, located in Brisbane Glen, which was depicted on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of the mid 19th century and which was involved in the milling of corn and flour.
