The West of Scotland Archaeology Service was contacted last week by a resident of Kirknewton, asking whether we held any information on the current location of a hogback stone, which formerly stood within the churchyard. This stone was formerly legally protected as a scheduled monument, though it was removed from the schedule in 2013 because it had been removed from the churchyard at some point before that date. Enquiries with Historic Environment Scotland revealed that the stone had been present in 1988 but had been removed by 1993, when their Monument Warden found it to be missing. The current location of the stone is unknown, as are the circumstances of its removal. However, any information what may have happened to the stone would be much appreciated.
