Staff from Addyman Archaeology are currently on site at Paisley Abbey, excavating a number of small trial trenches on the former site of the West Range, with the aim of investigating the sub-surface conditions and levels of survival of elements of the building. Although these trenches are fairly limited in scale, they have revealed that the modern iron fence is set in concrete pads, which in turn overlie an earlier stone wall that is bonded with lime mortar. This may represent a surviving section of the eastern wall of the west range of the Abbey. A fragment of white gritty ware pottery has also been found during the course of the excavation, as has a redware floor tile.
