Archaeological evaluation trenching undertaken by Dr Clare Ellis of Argyll Archaeology Ltd has identified what may be a prehistoric burial site at Pennyfuir, by Oban. The work, which took place in a field under pasture, was carried out in advance of an extension to the adjacent cemetery on the advice of the West of Scotland Archaeology Service.
The possible burial was identified as an oval pit within one of the trial trenches. Excavation revealed it to be lined with cobbles and filled with a brown silt, a type of feature that was also identified by Dr Ellis during work conducted at Dunstaffhage in June 2010, where a similar cobble-lined pit was found to contain a crouched infant inhumation burial. The pit at Pennyfuir was not fully excavated during the intial evaluation phase, but will be subject to further work should the development progress.
