Search the Sites and Monuments Record
Use the form below to search for finds and sites in the WoSAS area. WoSAS Sites and Monuments information is also accessible through the Pastmap website.
The Sites and Monuments data made available through this web site, or Pastmap, or the WoSAS Interactive map search, is published for public information purposes only. The data should not be used for any development control or land management purposes without appropriate professional archaeological advice.
If you work for a commercial archaeological consultancy or contracting unit, and are undertaking research for a client for a planning or development control purpose, such as the preparation of a desk-based assessment or an Environmental Statement, or you are seeking information for another land management purpose, you may use the published data free of charge, but you should also consult WoSAS directly for a professional curatorial opinion on behalf of the relevant member Council in respect of the scope of assessments, evaluations, or other archaeological works. Failure to do so may result in your client's Environmental Statement, or other assessment report, or evaluation report, being rejected as incomplete, or not fit for purpose, in the WoSAS advice to the member Council. You may also request direct from WoSAS a digital extract of Sites and Monuments Record data for your own specific purposes in preparing reports for your clients, but a charge for the provision of this service will be levied in accordance with the WoSAS published fee charge policy.
All datasets are subject to frequent revision. The West of Scotland Archaeology Service Joint Committee will have no liability in respect of any error, inaccuracy or omission in information provided on this website, or in respect of any costs, expenses or losses incurred by reason of any such error, inaccuracy or omission.
WoSAS Interactive Map-Search
A new function has been developed to allow members of the public to access WoSAS Sites and Monuments Record data. This search facility, which was developed in conjunction with South Ayrshire Council, can be tried at the WoSAS Interactive Mapping page. Using this system, you can find out about sites, monuments and previous archaeological events from across the area covered by the West of Scotland Archaeology Service, either by identifying single features on the map or by selecting groups of features by drawing search areas onto the map. A basic guide to using the system is available in the 'Getting Started' box to the left of the main map panel, but to find out more about the full functionality of the system, you should use the 'Help' button on the toolbar.
Thanks go to Stewart McCall and the ICT Services Team at South Ayrshire Council for their work in developing this system. Any comments on the system or problems experienced while using it should be referred to Martin O'Hare at the West of Scotland Archaeology Service
