Nemphlar, in the reign of King William the Lion, seems to have had a church of its own, which, after its annexation by that king to Lanark, became a chapel dependent on the mother church. Its site was at East Nemphlar, probably at a spot called 'Alman's appletree'.

The first edition Ordnance Survey map depicts a farmstead called Chapel at NGR 286245 644684 in the vicinity of the placename Chapel Knowe. Chapel is also depicted on Forrest's map of the County of Lanark 1816. This farmstead is not depicted on modern Ordnance Survey maps. All of the placename evidence appears to suggest that the likely location of this chapel is to the north-east of East Town of Nemphlar, possibly to the north of West Nemphlar road. The placename "Allmans Appletree" is depicted on the Roy map in this location. The farmstead later called Chapel is also depicted on the Roy map but without being named as such. It is not clear if the placename name "Allmans Appletree" on the Roy map is referring to the farmstead later called Chapel.
