Site Report

WoSASPIN 21374

The following site in West Dunbartonshire has been identified and recorded during fieldwork carried out by the staff of WoSAS. Full details are available in the WoSAS SMR.
NS 3639 7854 Wallacetown Glen Quarry.
West of Scotland Archaeology Service 1997.

Above the Cardross Road and on its SE side is a long quarry face with tool markings. The rock is a red sandstone, and the tool markings appear to be the result of cutting channels to remove blocks. This is almost certainly pre-modern, and the quality of the working may imply that the stone was quarried for use in a high-status building. The quarry face is around 1.5m high by perhaps 30m long.
