A mound is depicted at this location on current OS maps of the area, and was also shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1862. On the 1st edition, the mound appears to form the western terminus of a bank or levee running along the eastern bank of the River Leven, presumably representing some form of flood defence, though the mound does appear to have been represented as a separate entity, meaning that it is possible that it was constructed separately. On the 1st edition, the mound was shown as being located within the gardens of Strathleven House, while on current maps the mound is shown within an area of remnant woodland. The bank or levee shown on the 1st edition also appears to have been removed.

A mound has depicted at this since the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1862. The mound was originally depicted as the western terminus of a bank or levee running along the eastern bank of the River Leven, though the mound was shown as a separate entity. It is possible that the mound if linked to the additions/changes made by James Ewing in the 19th century and functioned as a viewing platform down to the south and over the gardens and river.

Site inspection: A marked, tree clad mound was located within mature planting against the bank of the River Leven. The mound was some 35m in diameter and up to 3.5m high. Given the natural height of the banks of the river at this point, a viewing platform within the designed landscape S7 seems most credible, though earlier origins are possible.
