Site ReportWoSASPIN 7802NS 428 795. A millstone lies 125m NNE of a possible long house. It has an 'eye' already cut in the centre, but the millstone is not undercut. The diameter is approximately 1.16m across. Location of this site was made known to the Drymen and District Local History Society by the landowner, Mr J W Bennie. Information from J Mitchell, Drymen and District Local History Society, to Prof. D G Tucker, University of Birmingham, 15 March 1989. NS 4271 7926 - The Main Range - A drystone built longhouse c.30m by 5m, subdivided is now represented by low (up to 0.4m) stony foundations. Walls appeare to be faced inside and out with large vertically set slabs retainin a rubble core, with large corner stones (one an undressed rounded field boulder). Immediately to S of the E end of main range is a subrectangular enclosure formed by tumbled waling now turfed over, it was probably an infield and not a structure/building. There are indications of associated field banks to N and NE of main range and possible structure at NS 4275 7931 where two low, short, parallel stretches of bankd are evident. A track way leading from the millstone quarry clearly rises over the field bank of the farmstead at NS 4273 7932. The Millstone quarry - NS 4300 7936 marks the centre of the main (latest?) phase of quarrying. This is a large open area c. 50m by 40m where stone has been quarried. A large identifiable fragment of a cut, and roughly dressed millstone lies at E end of main quarry at NS 4301 7934. This does not appear to be the same one as mentioned in the existing record as there is no "eye" cut in the sied uppermost at time of visit. There are other traces of quarrying in vicinity which stretches as far as other outcrops some 250m to NNW of main quarry. These are less obvious and take the form of either circular pits or less regular scoops and spoil mounds. At NS 4286 7970, on S side of an unmarked stream channel is a large (c.8-10m diameter and 2m deep) circular quarry pit. To the N of this there is a line of similar features (4 in total) separated by 10 to 20 from each other which may be related to millstone quarrying. A trackway utilises a stream channel leading W from the main quarry for some 200m before turning S to cross another channel and runs past the farmstead as previously mentioned. from NS 4265 7968 to NS 4276 7968 runs what may be a collapsed stone built field dyke, but it may also be derived from an extractive process as there are small quarry scoops along its course and at its W end a series of small scoops (test pits?) continues its line after the stony feature has stopped.
